LA SAGRADA FAMILIA

The Wayfarer - La Sagrada Familia

Barcelona is a city scattered with architectural marvel and is synonymous with late Catalan Architect, Gaudi.  His unique works have helped to put the city well and truly on the map.  The vibrant colours and the bold, unique designs of Gaudi's works almost act as a metaphor for Barcelona as a whole.  La Sagrada Familia, or Church of the Holy Family as it is also known, is one of Gaudi's most notable masterpieces.  It's one of the ultimate wonders of modern architecture, not just in Barcelona, but in the world!

The first thing that you may notice about La Sagrada Familia on entering is how vast it is; the ceiling stretches to dizzying heights.  Its unique design resemble organic structures, you won't find anything like it anywhere else.  It's truly unique.

There is a remarkable story behind this La Sagrida Familia; by the time Gaudi had passed away only a fraction of the church has been completed.  Its construction is still ongoing and there's an estimated completion date of 2026.

The outside of La Sagrada Familia is equally as impressive as its unique interior; it's covered with painstakingly intricate sculptures. There's no wonder why its completion has been such a long time in the making.

There is also a museum on site which gives details about the church, its construction and its design.  It's well worth checking out to get a insight into La Sagrada Familia's fascinating history.

Just a heads up; as you can imagine the queues to enter can be staggering so I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance.  There's nothing worse than queueing up in the sweltering heat for what could potentially be hours.   Admission is around €20 if you book in advance.

The open park complex that is located opposite to the entrance of La Sagrada Familia is also worth checking out.  There's often guys blowing mega-huge bubbles and it's a nice area to grab an ice cream and take a stroll.

We ended up rounding off the rest of the day by cooling off at Barceloneta beach.  One of the many reasons why I love Barcelona so much is that it has the golden combination of city and seaside.  The beach is lively with activity both during the daytime and at nighttime.  As the city descends into darkness the beach comes alive with party goers as it's one of Barcelona's nightlife hotspots.  Whether it's swimming and sunbathing or partying and clubbing, I highly recommend checking Barceloneta beach out.

If you're an art lover, Barcelona's Picasso Museum is another attraction that is well worth checking out.  The exhibitions include some of his earlier works and explore his relationship with Barcelona.

Following my visit Barcelona has become one of my all-time favourite cities.  There is something for everyone; from stunning beaches, an exciting culinary scene and let's not forget its world-class architectural intrigue.  You really can't go wrong with Barcelona.
