THAI FLOATING MARKET

Floating Market Thailand - The Wayfarer

One thing that I highly recommend checking in Thailand are the floating markets.  They are a novelty geared more towards tourists than locals but that's not to say it's any less of an experience.  As you explore the narrow canals you can simply kick back with a Chaing in hand and observe all the weird and wonderful Thai trinkets that are on offer.  It's an experience that is miles away from your typical Thai market.

There are a number of floating markets in Thailand but the majority of them are within close vicinity to Bangkok.  The one that I went to check out was the Damnoen Saduak in the Ratchaburi province which is located about an hour outside of Bangkok.   It's pretty large and not quite as touristy as some of the floating markets in Bangkok itself.

Each boat holds around five people and each tour generally takes around 40 minutes, depending on how often you stop.  If you see anything of interest during the voyage you simply ask your host to pull the boat over so that you have have a look and perhaps purchase some Thai trinkets for your loved ones back at home.

There are all manner of things on sale at the floating markets, a lot of which you would typically expect at any Thai market.  Fresh fruit, souvenirs, spices...some of the boats even have onboard makeshift kitchens and you can get what is essentially streetfood prepared for you fresh, right there on their boat, which is pretty awesome.

Gliding past the vibrant bustling market is a feast for the eyes.  It can be a bit touristy but I would still consider a visit to a Thai floating market to be an unmissable attraction when visiting the Land of Smiles.
