Monkey Beach - The Wayfarer

For many native English speakers who have the desire to experience life in Asia, teaching English is the perfect way to reconcile travel with work.  English teachers are in high demand in many rapidly economically and socially developing ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia - which are pushing for higher levels of English proficiency amongst its populations.  You don't necessarily need a degree in English or even a degree at all, just a good grasp of the English language and a passion to teach.

Discovering the Phi Phi archipelago via a boat tour is incredibly popular with visitors and I would personally consider it to be an unmissable activity.  Monkey Beach is a popular stop that is included on most tours along with other renowned destinations such as the Viking Caves and Maya Bay.  The scenery en route is stunning and there's usually option to do some swimming and snorkeling.  Lots of people also visit Monkey Beach in a kayak or via a water taxi.

As the boat approaches the small expanse of beach that is dominated by gangs of macaques it soon becomes clear that monkey beach is aptly named.  Be warned that the macaques are small but cunning and are notorious thieves that will relive you of your camera, sunglasses or anything shiny / expensive.  Given half the chance they will be off with them and into the bushes before you've even clocked onto anything so I would suggest keeping a keen eye on your valuables.

Monkey Beach is a great destination for animal lovers and the macaques are far from shy around humans due to the constant footfall of visitors that the beach receives.  There's a sign on the beach advising against feeding them, however many people do regardless to coax them closer.

I have to confess that personally I was a bit scared of the macaques and didn't get too close.  I witnessed a few of them bolt for passers by who got too close or intimidated them.  The prospect of being chased or bitten by any wild animal is one that will always shake me to the core.

Monkey Beach definitely qualifies as one of my all time favourite beaches.  Not only is it a mind-blowingly stunning destination but being greeted by the fury folk that inhabit it is guaranteed to put a big smile on your face.
