Inspiral (Vegan) - The Wayfarer

Insprial is a culinary hub for vegans, ethical eaters and the health conscious, sat right in the heart of Camden Lock. It specialises in serving a vibrant array of optimum health and 'free from' dishes in a relaxed dining atmosphere overlooking the canal.

It seems it's not just me who has been becoming increasingly fascinated with the vegan diet - the vegan 'movement' definitely seems to be gaining momentum and notoriety.  A number of my friends have converted to veganism and all of my omnivorous friends are partial to the odd vegan dish (I know I certainly am).  What's more is that there are certainly no shortage of people who wax-lyrical about the health benefits of 'going vegan'.

A group of food journalist and I headed down to Insprial for a marathon brunch to try out its new spring menu.  The first thing that warrants a mention is that the the food is wonderfully vibrant, beautifully presented and the portion sizes are very generous, so turn up with an appetite if you are thinking of ordering some of the larger dishes such as the veggie breakfast...

Breakfast : Full Vegan Bake-Up.

When it comes to breakfasts, I am more of an eggs Benedict kinda girl as opposed to a fry-up fan.  Although I do love the occasional meaty, greasy, filthy fry-up breakfast affair as much as the next person, I very often opt for the vegetarian option to spare myself from the impending sluggishness.

Last year the The Telegraph awarded InSpiral the award for Best Veggie Breakfast in the UK and having tried it myself, I can see why.   Some real genius has gone into this breakfast dish, from the homemade toast to the acclaimed veggie sausage.  Most notably of all, the scrambled tofu was absolutely remarkable in the fact that it looks and tastes exactly like scrambled eggs.   In fact if someone  hadn't told me, I probably wouldn't have even notice the difference between the real shabang and its tofu counterpart.

It's all baked as opposed to fried so it's not terribly greasy and isn't going to make you feel like crawling back into bed to sleep it off for an hour or two like a conventional fry-up might.  If you are partial to a veggie fry up then I highly suggest rounding up some friends and scheduling a breakfast date at Inspiral.

Breakfast : Raw Flax and Chia Seed Crepe.

The crepe is a great option for those looking for something light for breakfast.  It isn't cooked in any way so it's in keeping with the raw vegan diet.  It's a great way to kick-start your day with some fresh fruit to go towards your five-a-day.

Main : Seasonal Vegan Carpaccio.

The innovative vegan Parmesan used on this dish has the same texture and flavour as the real thing and is made from crushed seeds and a clever combination of seasoning.  This dish as a whole is light, refreshing and delicious.

Main : Raw Lasagna.

Raw vegan lasagna is a fascinating dish that I've spotted on a number of food blogs.  As it's made up of raw plant-based ingredients, you can tuck into a large portion guilt free, unlike regular lasagna.  This recipe contains almond and hazelnut cheese, pink pizzaiola sauce, julienne vegetable with wild garlic and oregano pesto.  Although it doesn't really compare to the melty cheesy real thing, it's light and has some similar flavours going on.  I like it a lot and it's definitely something that I would order again.

Inspiral also has its very own brand of 'visionary foods' which include organic and raw vegan snacks and superfoods, available from its cafe and online store.  The range is nothing short of innovative...

Its range includes smoothie powders, coconut chips and organic sweeteners but their stand-out product was by far their best-selling kale chips, which are an absolute game-changer when it comes to snacking.  They are crispy and flavoursome like regular potato chips but the difference with these is that they are actually good for you; in fact they count as one of your five a day.  They qualify as 'raw vegan' as they are not cooked but instead dehydrated and kale is one of the most nutrient rich vegetables out there.  I'm a big fan.

The Inspiral range which features innovative eco packaging which is fully compostable; it's a shame that more brands don't utilise environmentally considerate packaging such as this.  Did I mention that the cafe also runs on 100% renewable energy?   It's a place that has commendable ethos when it comes to the environment.

If you are looking for a hearty, nutritious and guilt-free lunch whether you are a vegan or not then I highly recommend Inspiral.  It's relaxed atmosphere makes for a great place to get together with friends and if you've not yet tried proper vegan food, then Inspiral is well worth a visit.  You might just be surprised!
