COASTAL ROAD TRIP TO THE UK'S MOST SOUTHERLY POINTSeptember 08, 2015
For me, nothing beats a spontaneous road trip; hastily grabbing your things, bundling into a car with company just as eager for adventure as you are and going wherever the road ahead takes you. I recently embarked on a road trip to an end; the Lizard Point, the most southerly point of mainland Britain.
If like me, you are a sucker for a coastal scenery then you will likely fall in love with the epic views from the Lizard Point; all you see on the horizon is vast expanses of sea in all directions. On a sunny day when light glistens off the water it's the sort of scenery that could melt the heart.
There is a small (free) car park, an independent cafe with benches that overlook the sea and some quaint Cornish souvenir shops where you can pick up some of the Lizard's famous serpentine. One of the many things that I love about Cornwall is that it's not corporate; its economy is driven by small local and independent businesses that rely heavily on tourism. This means that when you visit Cornwall you really feel like you are on holiday.
The view of the stunning but treacherous coastline of cliffs and manacles really speaks for itself.
The winding pathway leads down to the disused lifeboat house where a number of wooden dinghys are kept.
The surrounding grassy cliff area is home to colony of rabbits that are somewhat tame. The Lizard is a popular place for coastal walks and features some of Cornwall's most dramatic coastline and due to its sub-tropical micro-climate it has some beautiful plants and flowers.
There Lizard Lighthouse warns ships of the treacherous coastline. There is a visitors centre so you can learn all about the Lizard's past of shipwereckeckers and smugglers.
Avid road-trippers should definitely consider Cornwall as a destination because you can drive pretty much anywhere in the county and come across somewhere beautiful or something interesting. You can simply let the country roads beckon you forth to your destination.
If you go to one place in Cornwall then make it the Lizard Point; it's a stunning place no matter what the season and taking a visit to the most southerly point of mainland Britain is something that I think everyone should do at least once - you definitely won't regret it. Happy road-tripping!
